La Joya Landfill
The La Joya Municipal Landfill of Granada is located in the southeastern section of the city, 5 km from the city center. The surrounding population is highly impoverished and is part of the community of El Hormigón.

Adults and children worked in the landfill on a permanent basis collecting inorganic waste with no personal protection at extreme risk of health and personal harm. Currently there are 23 families including 48 school-aged children who are living under these circumstances.

Our project began in April 2013, when CWF got involved with 25 young children and teenagers who worked collecting trash at La Joya Municipal Dump by removing them from this situation and subsequently enrolling them in school.
Removing children from the landfill caused an economic burden on their families. To offset the lost wages, CWF provides monthly food baskets to the families that are committed to their children’s education.

Students are provided with school uniform and backpacks filled with necessary materials to attend school. All students are provided tutoring in all subjects to enable them to catch up with their peers.

CWF provides families with additional aid including adult education, scholarships to technical schools and housing construction program.

Families have access to CWF’s no-cost health clinics and dental care.
